Democrats will never again have an all-male and all-white ticket

Vice President elect Kamala Harris gives victory speech in symbolic suffragette white.

The world let out a deep breath on Saturday morning (Australia time).

Relief.

That was the overwhelming feeling when the TV networks FINALLY announced Joe Biden would be the next President of the United States.

This was a sober victory, unlike the euphoria of the Obama win in 2008. This was the victory of a country teetering on the fringes of fascism and just being pulled back from the brink.

There will be many takes in the coming days.

There will be plenty of analysis of what happened and why.

But here is my take: there will never be another all-male or all-white Democratic leadership ticket.

It was clear when Vice President elect Kamala Harris walked out to deliver her victory remarks in suffragette white that Democratic Party will never again have an all-male and all-white ticket. Those days are history.

Kamala Harris’s speech was powerful and symbolic. The girls Kamala Harris addressed in her speech were watching closely.

Vice President-elects normally don’t give a victory speech. It says a lot about Joe Biden and the kind of President he will be that he share the moment. It was also his best speech of the campaign: big-hearted and inclusive.

And to all those who supported us: I am proud of the campaign we built and ran. I am proud of the coalition we put together, the broadest and most diverse in history. Democrats, Republicans and Independents. Progressives, moderates and conservatives. Young and old. Urban, suburban and rural. Gay, straight, transgender. White. Latino. Asian. Native American. And especially for those moments when this campaign was at its lowest – the African American community stood up again for me. They always have my back, and I’ll have yours.

Following the victory speeches relief turned to joy as people took to the streets. People danced, cried and celebrated this historic moment and the end of Donald Trump’s Presidency.
